National Legal Service remains steadfast in its determination to help secure legal protection for those facing domestic abuse. We are proud to share a significant milestone – NLS has now supported more than 25,000 victims and survivors with applications for non-molestation orders since we opened our doors in 2018.
This figure represents far more than a statistic. It reflects thousands of people who found the courage to seek help, thousands of stories of fear and resilience and thousands of moments where protection and safety finally became a reality.
Non-molestation orders provide legal protection to those who are experiencing domestic abuse, harassment or intimidation from a partner, ex-partner or a family member. For many, they offer the first moment in time when they have been heard and supported to take a stand against domestic abuse. More often than not, commencing court proceedings of this nature is a hugely overwhelming situation marred with self doubt and fear as to what a formal court process will involve. Our teams are committed to ensuring victims and survivors do not feel alone during this time. Our teams offer guidance through each stage of the process, explaining all legal options in clear terms and ensuring the court application is supported by compelling evidence to secure the protection sought. We do this quickly, effectively and with sensitivity, because we know how urgent and emotional the whole process can be.
Assisting more than 25,000 victims has only been possible because of the hard work of our specialist solicitors, paralegals, administrators and support teams. Many of these cases require financial support for victims and survivors through the provision of legal aid – we are committed to ensuring that cost is not a barrier when protection from violence is required and this has been at the heart of our mission since the very beginning. We have assisted more than 100+ clients on a pro bono basis (when they can not afford private fees and are not eligible for legal aid) and have a number of solicitors that are recognised in the Law Society’s Pro bono Recognition list.
The milestone also reminds us that, sadly, demand for our specialist legal advice continues to grow. While the circumstances leading someone to contact us are often distressing, each application we support represents a step toward safety, dignity and a future without abuse. We remain dedicated to giving victims and survivors the confidence to take that step.
Our work is never about numbers, it is about people. It is about ensuring someone feels heard for the first time. It is about helping a parent protect their children. It is about creating space for a life free from fear. Since 2018, we have stood beside thousands of victims and survivors, and we will continue to do so with the same dedication, compassion and expertise.
To anyone who may need protection or advice, our teams are here to listen and to help. If you or someone you know requires legal support regarding domestic abuse, you do not need to face it alone. A conversation can be the start of change, and we are ready to support that first step whenever you are.
